Slot Machine Odds & RTP

Unlike table games, slot odds are set by software. Here's what RTP means, what numbers to look for, and how slots compare to other casino games.

What is RTP?

Return to Player (RTP) is the percentage of all money wagered that a slot pays back to players over a very large number of spins — typically millions. An RTP of 96% means the slot pays back £96 for every £100 wagered on average.

House edge = 100% − RTP. A 96% RTP slot has a 4% house edge. This is a long-run statistical average, not a per-session guarantee. In any individual session, results vary widely — sometimes dramatically.

RTP Ranges by Slot Type

Slot Type RTP Range House Edge
Land Casino Slots 85–92% 8–15%
Online Slots (typical) 94–97% 3–6%
Online Slots (high) 97–99% 1–3%
Progressive Jackpot 88–94% 6–12%

Slots vs Table Games — House Edge Comparison

Game House Edge
Blackjack (basic strategy) 0.5%
Craps (pass + free odds) 0%*
Baccarat (Banker) 1.06%
European Roulette 2.70%
Slots (online, 96% RTP) 4%
Slots (land casino, 88% RTP) 12%
American Roulette 5.26%

* Craps free odds has 0% edge when combined with pass line (1.41%); combined effect depends on odds multiple taken.

RTP vs Volatility — What's the Difference?

Two slots with identical 96% RTPs can play very differently. Volatility (variance) describes how the RTP is distributed across spins:

  • Low volatility: frequent small wins, gradual bankroll drain. RTP is returned in many small payments.
  • High volatility: rare but large wins, long dry spells. The same RTP is concentrated in fewer, bigger hits.
  • Progressive jackpot slots: extreme high volatility — most of the RTP is in the jackpot, which the vast majority of players never hit.

For bankroll preservation, low volatility slots run longer on the same budget. High volatility slots offer bigger swings — the possibility of a session-defining win, balanced against longer losing runs.
