How to Play Poker
The game above is Jacks or Better — the most popular form of video poker and an excellent way to learn hand values. You play against the pay table, not other players. The goal: make the strongest five-card hand possible after one draw.
- 1 Place your bet
Select your bet size ($5, $10, $25) and click Deal to start a new hand.
- 2 Receive five cards
You are dealt five cards face-up from a standard 52-card deck.
- 3 Select cards to hold
Click any cards you want to keep. Cards you don't hold will be replaced on the draw.
- 4 Draw
Click Draw to replace discarded cards. Your final hand is evaluated against the pay table.
- 5 Collect winnings
Winning hands from Jacks or Better upward are paid at the stated multiplier. Royal Flush pays 800× your bet.
Poker Strategy
Poker hands ranked from strongest to weakest. In Texas Hold'em, the best five-card hand from any combination of your two hole cards and five community cards wins the pot.
History of Poker
Poker's origins are contested — French poque, Persian as-nas, and German pochspiel all share structural features. The game took its modern form on the Mississippi riverboats of the 1830s and 40s, spreading west with the Gold Rush.
The World Series of Poker was founded in 1970 at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas. The modern tournament era exploded in 2003 when amateur Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event after qualifying online — a moment that triggered a worldwide poker boom.
Poker FAQ
What beats what in poker?
From highest to lowest: Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair, High Card. In Texas Hold'em, the best five-card hand wins.
What is the difference between Texas Hold'em and other poker variants?
Texas Hold'em deals two private "hole" cards to each player and five community cards face-up. Players make the best five-card hand using any combination. Other variants include Omaha (four hole cards, must use exactly two), Seven-Card Stud (no community cards), and Five-Card Draw (five private cards, one drawing round).
What are pot odds and why do they matter?
Pot odds are the ratio of the current pot size to the cost of the call you are facing. If the pot contains $100 and you need to call $20, your pot odds are 5:1. You compare this to the probability of completing your hand. If your odds of hitting are better than the pot odds, calling is mathematically correct long-term.
What is a blind in poker?
Blinds are forced bets posted before cards are dealt, creating initial action. The player left of the dealer posts the small blind (half the minimum bet) and the next player posts the big blind (the full minimum bet). The blinds rotate clockwise each hand.
What is Jacks or Better video poker?
Jacks or Better is the most common video poker variant. You are dealt five cards and choose which to hold before drawing replacements. The minimum winning hand is a pair of Jacks or higher. Played with optimal strategy, Jacks or Better returns over 99.5% to the player.
