How live roulette works

In a live roulette studio, the dealer — the casino term is croupier — operates a standard roulette wheel on a felt-covered table. Multiple camera angles capture the wheel, the betting grid, and the dealer. The feed is compressed and sent via a low-latency video stream to players on desktop, mobile, or tablet.

Players interact through a digital interface overlaid on the video. The sequence is the same as a physical casino:

1. The betting timer opens. Players have a fixed window — typically 15 to 20 seconds — to place chips on the digital layout.
2. The croupier spins the wheel and releases the ball.
3. When the ball drops into a pocket, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanner reads the result automatically and resolves bets within the software.
4. The croupier announces the result, the camera lingers on the winning pocket, and the next round opens.

The use of OCR allows outcomes to be settled faster than a human could enter them manually. Payouts and losses appear in the player’s balance before the croupier has finished announcing the number.

Live tables run 24 hours a day. Unlike software-based (RNG) roulette, which generates outcomes in milliseconds, live roulette is constrained by the physical time it takes a wheel to spin down — roughly 30 to 45 seconds for a standard-speed table.

European roulette — the standard live format

European roulette uses a 37-pocket wheel: numbers 1 through 36, alternating red and black, plus a single green zero. The house edge is 2.70% across every bet type on the layout — inside bets, outside bets, and call bets all carry the same edge.

This figure comes directly from the zero. There are 37 possible outcomes per spin, but standard outside bets (red/black, odd/even, high/low, dozens, columns) cover at most 18 numbers — none of which includes zero. When zero lands, all outside bets lose. Inside bets that include zero pay normally; inside bets that do not cover zero lose their chips.

European roulette is the default live format at virtually every online casino. When a table is labelled simply “Live Roulette” without a variant qualifier, it is almost always European.

French roulette — en prison and la partage

French roulette uses the identical 37-pocket, single-zero wheel. The meaningful difference is two optional rules that apply when the ball lands on zero during an even-money outside bet:

La partage — half the stake is returned immediately to the player and the bet is closed. The house retains the other half.

En prison — the full stake is frozen on the layout (“imprisoned”) and remains for the following spin. If that spin wins the bet, the original stake is returned in full. If it loses, the stake is forfeited entirely.

Both rules produce the same long-run result for the player: the effective house edge on even-money bets drops from 2.70% to 1.35%. That is the lowest house edge available in any standard form of roulette and one of the lowest in any casino table game at all.

French roulette applies only to even-money outside bets. Inside bets and non-even-money outside bets (dozens, columns) carry the standard 2.70% edge even on a French layout.

Not every casino offers French live roulette — fewer tables run with these rules than European. When it is available and you are betting red/black, odd/even, or high/low, French roulette is the correct choice.
