How to Play Blackjack

Blackjack is a card game played between you and the dealer. The objective: get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer — without going over. The rules are simple; mastery takes longer.

  1. 1
    Place your bet

Choose your chip size and click the betting area to set your wager before the deal.

  2. 2
    Receive your cards

You and the dealer each receive two cards. Your cards are face up; one of the dealer's cards is face down (the hole card).

  3. 3
    Evaluate your hand

Count your card values: number cards are face value, face cards (J/Q/K) are 10, Aces are 1 or 11.

  4. 4
    Hit or stand

Hit to receive another card or stand to keep your current total. You can also double down or split pairs when eligible.

  5. 5
    Watch the dealer

The dealer reveals the hole card and must hit until reaching 17 or higher.

  6. 6
    Win or lose

If your total is higher than the dealer's without busting, you win. A natural blackjack (Ace + 10-value) pays 3:2.

Blackjack Strategy

Basic strategy is the mathematically proven optimal way to play every possible hand. Master it and you reduce the house edge to under 0.5%.

Always hit: Hard 8 or less

You can't bust; always take a card.

Always stand: Hard 17 or more

The risk of busting outweighs potential gain.

Always split: Aces or 8s

Aces are powerful starters; 8s escape a weak 16.

Never split: 10s or 5s

20 is near-perfect; 10 is better for doubling.

History of Blackjack

Blackjack's origins trace to early 18th-century France, where a game called Vingt-et-Un ("twenty-one") was played in salons. The game crossed the Atlantic and evolved in American gambling halls, where the name "blackjack" emerged — referring to a special hand that paid a bonus.

The modern era began in 1962 when mathematician Edward Thorp published Beat the Dealer, proving that card counting could give players a statistical edge. Casinos responded with multi-deck shoes and countermeasures, shaping the game we know today.

Blackjack FAQ

What is the goal of blackjack?

The goal is to beat the dealer by getting a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over (busting). You don't need to get exactly 21 — you just need a higher total than the dealer.

What does it mean to "stand" in blackjack?

To stand means you are satisfied with your current hand total and do not want any more cards. Play then moves to the dealer.

When should I split pairs?

Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. For other pairs, the correct decision depends on the dealer's upcard — consult the basic strategy chart for optimal play.

What is basic strategy?

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal set of decisions for every possible hand combination in blackjack. Following it reduces the house edge to under 0.5%.

Can I count cards on livecasino.net?

This is a free-play browser game, so card counting practice is possible. However, card counting in a real casino is difficult and casinos have countermeasures against it.
